This is a simple resource-free activity where each student adds a word to create a group story. Despite the simplicity, it can be quite challenging though, and is more suitable for higher levels. The activity could also be used with teens.
| Teaching teens
'Overweight Britain' is a lesson which focuses on statistics on obesity, and encourages students to practise speaking skills in a role play and discussion activity. As this may be a sensitive topic for many young people, you will need to think a little about the students in the group you are planning to use it with beforehand.
| Teaching adults
'OpenCities Budget' is a speaking activity in which students have to look at how to encourage migration to an imaginary city. They look at a number of projects to help support this and have to agree how to allocate a budget.

Planning lessons and courses is a central professional practice, since being able to plan well is one of the key skills that a teacher needs to have. It involves the ability to zoom out and know how a 2-hour lesson fits into a 100-hour course, but it also involves the ability to zoom in and work out the mechanics of how a 15-minute activity will work best.
