TeachingEnglish newsletter 11 October 2017

TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers
11 October 2017

Welcome to the TeachingEnglish newsletter.
This week we have a new lesson plan for young learners to mark World Food Day on 16 October. For teens, we have a discussion activity - Noah's Ark in Space. And for adults, a lesson that develops negotiation skills, especially clarifying, summarising and responding.

We also announce our new blog topics for September and October on the theme of 'Career and teacher development'.

We have an exciting and practical publication for you to download - 'The Image in English Language Teaching'.

And finally, if you missed our webinars to celebrate World Teachers' Day, you can now watch the recordings and read an interesting blog post by Malu Sciamarelli - 'Should language teachers avoid global issues when teaching?'

We hope you find these resources useful.

In this lesson, 'World Food Day' (which is celebrated on 16 October), pupils learn about the problem of hunger in the world and the need to work together to eradicate it. The lesson is aimed at A2-level learners aged 10 years and focuses on reading, critical thinking and writing skills.

Teaching teens

'Noah's Ark in Space' is a small-group, free-discussion activity aimed at pre-intermediate students and above, in which students are asked to decide which animals should be selected to go aboard a spacecraft in order to safeguard their survival. The activity can also lead into a good class discussion about why animals are important.

Teaching adults

In a negotiation, it's very important to know when to speak, when to ask and when to shut up and listen. In this lesson, students rank and discuss the stages of negotiation, do a reading activity and look at negotiation vocabulary, examine question types, then finish with a role play to practise clarifying, summarising and responding.

Development

'The Image in English Language Teaching', edited by Kieran Donaghy and Daniel Xerri, is a collection of insightful articles and practical ideas for using still and moving images in the language classroom.

Events
