Welcome to this week's edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter!

This week we are happy to announce that episode 4, Where there's a CLIL there's a way, of our new ten-part podcast 'The Climate Connection' is available to listen to.

We also have a new, interesting report by Steve Mann, Understanding the effectiveness of professional development opportunities for teachers delivered remotely.

For the classroom, we have two lesson plans to celebrate two special days: World Chocolate Day (7 July) and Mandela Day (18 July).

We are also pleased to announce that the Hornby Trust Teacher Association Project scheme 2021/22 call for applications is open, and The Teacher Trainer journal is back, online, and currently free!

The Climate Connection episode 4: Where there's a CLIL there's a way

Episode 4 in our ten-part podcast series exploring the relationship between the climate crisis and language education looks into what teaching and learning methods can effectively address the climate crisis. Teaching materials are the focus of episode 4, specifically how we can maintain the right balance between content and language. Aleksandra Zaparucha guides us through the world of CLIL, while Linda Ruas and Owain Alexander talk about their websites (Easier English Wiki and ELT Sustainable), which provide hundreds of free-to-use lesson plans on climate-related issues.

The Teacher Trainer journal has recently relaunched with a new digital edition for summer 2021. Phil Dexter, the new editor of the journal, is very pleased to announce that Pilgrims The Teacher Trainer journal is back in publication again as a digital journal, and currently you can access the journal for free!

Mandela Day

Mandela Day is celebrated every year on 18 July. This integrated skills lesson plan for upper-secondary students looks at Nelson Mandela's life and explores some of the themes surrounding South Africa during apartheid. Students will learn about Mandela and then discuss ideas for projects to help others.

Chocolate: from the land to the hand

Celebrate World Chocolate Day with this lesson for teenagers and adults at B1+ level. The aim of the lesson is to learn who makes our chocolate and, importantly, who receives our money each time we buy a bar of chocolate. Students will develop their reading skills and become aware of the injustices.

Hornby Trust Teacher Association Project scheme 2021/22

The Hornby Trust and British Council are pleased to announce the Hornby Trust Teacher Association Project scheme 2021/22. The call for applications is now open. New applications from Teacher Associations in countries on the list of ODA recipient countries are welcome, and guidance documents and the proposal form can be found on the Hornby projects page.

Understanding the effectiveness of professional development opportunities for teachers delivered remotely

A year on from the start of the pandemic, this evaluation looks at existing literature around remote learning effectiveness in general and at specific examples of the use of different remote channels currently being deployed on three British Council teacher development programmes in Palestine, Egypt and Syria, and on one regional programme involving teachers from across the Middle East and North Africa region. This week we are happy to announce that episode 3, 'Language recycling', of our new ten-part podcast 'The Climate Connection' is available to listen to.

For the classroom, we have a lesson plan for primary learners on the importance of animals, a lesson for secondary students on links between sport and the climate crisis, and a new lesson for adults and teenagers focused on jobs in the 21st century.

We also invite you to join two upcoming events. The first is a round table discussion looking at new ways of teaching and the skills teachers need to support student learning remotely or in a combination of face-to-face and online. The second is a refugee week workshop, which focuses on educating refugees online during Covid-19.

Scott Thornbury charts the history of 'green pedagogy', discussing what kind of teaching approaches are not only effective for language teaching, but are also climate positive.

New ways of teaching webinar: skills and CPD for teachers

Educational systems across the world have been shaken in the past year, and teaching and learning has moved online when possible. The British Council Americas commissioned ELT Consultants to conduct research in order to better understand the different skills needed by English teachers to support student learning remotely or in a combination of face-to-face and online. Join us on 24 June for this round table discussion.

A new logo for the World Wildlife Fund

This lesson plan and student materials have been designed to be used in either face-to-face classrooms or remote teaching contexts with primary learners. Students will read about five more unusual, endangered animals and choose one to replace the giant panda as the symbol of worldwide conservation.

Sports in (climate) crisis

In this lesson for secondary students, learners will consider the impact of major sports events on the living planet and the impact of global heating on sports, and explore possible solutions and compromises that the world of sport might need to take to lessen its impact.

21st century jobs

This lesson will encourage adult learners to discuss the future of work and the environmental impact that the workplace can and could have. They will consider both the types of jobs that we can expect to develop in the 21st century and the nature and characteristics of the jobs. The lesson plan and student materials have been designed to be used in either face-to-face classrooms or remote teaching contexts.

Refugee week workshop: educating refugees online during Covid-19

This online event, taking place Friday 18 June, is being run jointly by the University of Manchester and Caritas Salford. During the workshop both organisations will present key findings and strategies for teaching refugees online. Participants are welcome to attend both sessions, or simply come for one session.
