TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers
30 September 2015

Welcome to the latest newsletter from TeachingEnglish!
This week we announce a webinar organised by the IATEFL TTEd SIG, TELC and Crisis-ELT about 'Teacher Education for Difficult and 'Super-difficult' Circumstances'.

To celebrate World Teachers' Day, we also have some interesting blog posts by our bloggers and associates for you to read.

For the classroom, we have some great teaching tools for teens for you to use, and an interesting speaking activity to use with your adult or teen students.

The featured professional practice from our new CPD framework this week is 'Managing resources', and registration for 'Primary Essentials' is now open.

And finally, if you missed the 'Learning to learn' streamed conference from the British Council in Madrid, you can watch recorded sessions.

We hope you find these resources useful.

If you missed the 'Learning to learn' streamed conference from the British Council in Madrid, you can catch up by watching recorded sessions. Gail Ellis, leading expert and author of
the recently published 'Teaching children how to learn', gave the opening plenary. There were also sessions on Early Years, Exams, Bilinguilism or CLIL, and encouraging class introverts.

Teaching teens

Have you checked out our 'Teaching tools' for teens? From the interactive phonemic chart to badge builders, from great posters on teaching writing, reading, or vocabulary to suggestions on how to get the whole class talking, find tools to use in your teenage classroom.

Teaching adults

Do you have students who are shy, or bored with traditional pair-work activities? Try 'Change place, change face'. This is a low-preparation activity for learners at all levels that gives maximum speaking time and helps develop fluency. The slightly 'unusual' classroom set-up seems to encourage students to speak, producing a healthy buzz and fostering a positive
learning environment.
Development

This week we feature the professional practice from our new CPD framework 'Managing resources'. Find resources to help you with this professional practice.

We are also pleased to announce that registration is open for 'Primary Essentials' - an introductory course to teaching English to young learners aged 7 to 11.

This webinar addresses the neglected issue of how teachers can be prepared or supported to teach in 'difficult circumstances' including large classes, lack of resources (textbooks, technology etc.) or in 'super-difficult' or 'crisis' situations.

Magazine

To celebrate World Teachers' Day on October 5th, we've asked our bloggers and associates to write about why they became teachers. Read some of their reflections in our magazine.

Homework is generally part of any English course and is set with the aim of helping children absorb and build on work done in class and to extend their learning time. Doing homework also helps children on their way to becoming independent learners. Here are some ideas for using LearnEnglish Kids for homework.

Teaching teens

'Taking some 'time out' from regular classes and doing something completely different can really help group dynamics and you may also give quieter or less able students a chance to shine. Making a class magazine is a project that will appeal to most groups as it allows individuals to work on what interests them. Starting a project from scratch can seem a little daunting to begin with so here's a simple step-by-step guide on how to make a class magazine.

Teaching adults

'Do you ban the use of phones in the class or do you embrace the technology? How can you use the smart phone as a teaching and learning tool? This article gives practical tips on the learning possibilities of smartphones in the EFL classroom.
