Welcome to the latest edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter!

This week we have a special lesson plan for Safer Internet Day. We also have an activity to practise comparative forms.

We have two exciting live-streamed events: the English language council lecture which celebrates Shakespeare and the English
language, and a seminar exploring equality and diversity in the ESOL classroom.

Finally, we have news of the 5th ALTE international conference and if you are based in Europe, an opportunity to be involved in an
online survey.

We hope you find these resources useful.

Best wishes
Deb

February 11th is Safer Internet Day. To help raise awareness of this important issue, our monthly lesson plan for February 2014 is all about online safety and young learners. In this lesson, students start by talking about how they use the internet, they then watch a video about online safety and read about staying safe online. They do a speaking activity based on the video and the text, and finish by making a poster with their top tips for staying safe online.

This activity looks at ways of making comparative forms by asking learners to compare things that are usually thought of as opposites. It can be used to revise structures or to present them as part of an inductive approach. It also encourages learners to be creative. The activity would be suitable for an elementary to intermediate level.
