Hello again!

This week in the newsletter we have a new lesson in our series building up to next year's Olympic and Paralympic Games, this week it features the sports of canoeing and kayaking. There's another in our series of video discussions that were filmed at this year's IATEFL conference, this time looking at what teachers think makes a bad lesson.

There's an article on the practice of reading out loud in the EFL classroom and an announcement of a new competition - for teachers based in Turkey - to be a 'roving reporter' at Dogus University. Finally, there's also a new poll in which you can let us know whether you think it is important for teachers to motivate their students.

Best wishes

Reading out loud
teachingenglishthinkAs a teacher I had always perceived 'reading aloud' as a 'taboo' in the EFL classroom since it focuses specifically on a 'bottom-up' approach where learners can fall into traps of worrying about 100% comprehension or simply read aloud without understanding the text. This year, all that changed.

Is it important to motivate your students?

Most theories suggest that students who have a high degree of motivation are more successful learners. However not all students have this level of motivation. Is it the teacher's job to help motivate students in this case?
