Welcome to this week's TeachingEnglish newsletter!

We have lots of practical ideas for you to try as teachers begin thinking about the new academic year. There's a Britlit pack that looks at the story of Billy Elliot and is based on the famous British film of the same name. There are some ideas for using poems, quotations and proverbs in class and there's a whole page of ideas about how you can use our sister site LearnEnglish Kids to practise listening.

The ELT Online Reading Group is now reaching its fourth anniversary and to celebrate they are launching their latest writing competition. All members are invited to take part. Perhaps you would like to get involved - if you're not a member sign up now.

Finally there's a question from one of our readers who would like to know what other teachers think about teaching culture to children. If you have any experience of this then let them know what you think.

Best wishes

The novel by Melvin Burgess is based on the film of the same name. This is BritLit's first foray into the world of full length novels. We think it works!

Using poems, quotations and proverbs

TeachingEnglishTry

Learning a language does not just mean saying something new. It helps to also practise saying words and sounds. The activities below are ways for students to enjoy the music of English. Choose short simple poems that are close to students' lives. These poems are not for heavy analysis. They are for saying aloud.

Teaching culture to children
I'd like to find out more about the subject of teaching culture to children. There are many questions that I would love to have answered, including: Is teaching about a foreign culture helpful to young learners? If the children are using only L1 wouldn't they be better off with a straight language class?
