Hello again!

This week's TeachingEnglish newsletter features a new video teaching tip that explores whether or not the phonemic chart is useful when teaching English. Why not watch our teachers Peter and Clare present their ideas and then let us know your own thoughts? If you've never tried using the phonemic chart with your students we're also featuring an article that demonstrates lots of ways for you to indroduce it in class.

If you teach young learners it's still not too late for you to enter them in the LearnEnglish Kids 'What's your news?' video competition. The best video will be published on the LearnEnglish Kids website.

The newsletter also includes a simple word game that's suitable for high level students and finally, there's a cry for help from one of our readers who is about to be interviewed for a place on a CELTA course, can anyone help her out?

Best wishes

Duncan

Using the phonemic chart

Teachers often disagree on whether or not to use the phonemic chart in their lessons. Watch Peter and Clare argue for and against, then why not tell us what you think. Do you use the phonemic chart with your students? Why? Why not?

Integrating pronunciation into classroom activities
teachingenglishthinkPronunciation work has traditionally taken a secondary role in language teaching to work on grammar and more recently lexis. In my work as a teacher trainer I have been surprised at how often experienced teachers are reluctant to tackle pronunciation issues in class.

This interesting website is part of an American-Brazilian research project, and gives you an estimate for how many words you know following a short two-stage test. It's free and gives you a result immediately when you finish the test, which might take up to 10 minutes.

One word stories

TeachingEnglishTry

This activity is extremely simple. Each student adds a word to create a group story. Despite the simplicity it can be really challenging and I would only use it with higher levels. The teacher can begin by saying the first word and each student adds the next word.

CELTA interview at International House - HELP!
Hello - I have an interview early next week for a CELTA course. I've been told that I will need to do two written tests each lasting 30 mins (one of the tests will relate to my Pre-Interview Assessment). I have no idea what this involves or what to prepare. Please can anyone who has done a similar interview provide any guidance or explain what exactly the tests involve?
