Welcome to another edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter. Carol Read is still with us as Guest Writer and this week she wants to know what books you like using best when teaching young learners. Visit her blog to let her know what books you enjoy and how you use them.

This week we have a new guide which looks at ways of creating and updating websites to support the work of language teachers, an article which looks at the slightly neglected subject of 'homework' and a new speaking activity. Homework

Homework seems to be an accepted part of teachers' and students' routines, but there is little mention of it in ELT literature. The role of homework is hardly mentioned in the majority of general ELT texts or training courses, suggesting that there is little question as to its value even if the resulting workload is time-consuming.

Shopping at the minimarket

TeachingEnglishTry This speaking activity reviews uncountable and countable nouns (food), some/any and prices and is suitable for pre-intermediate 9 -11 year olds. Students draw their own shop and contents and write lists of things they want to buy. The teacher elicits a dialogue and then students mingle to go shopping at the shops to try to buy everything on their list.

What are your favourite story books?

My very first experience of blogging came a few months ago when ELT trainer and author, Lindsay Clandfield, invited me to do a 'guest spot' on teaching young learners on his blog 'Six things - A miscellany of English language'. Lindsay's blog is a varied collection of interesting, surprising and often amusing things about teaching and learning. The only proviso is that every posting comes in a list of six.
