Welcome to the latest edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter. This week we have two new activities for you to try including an activity to practice narrative tenses with pre-intermediate students and some activities based around using videos from our excellent sister site LearnEnglishKids.

Also on the site is a new blog about using controversial topics in class and you might be able to take the opportunity to help answer a question from a fellow teacher.

To Catch A Thief: Past simple and past continuous practice.
TeachingEnglishTry This activity can be used as practice for using narrative tenses, particularly past simple and progressive/continuous with pre-intermediate students. It is a very structured activity in which students write a short newspaper article about a robbery.

Put simply, this means that more challenging material follows on from slightly less challenging material. Elementary learners learn Elementary language items and Advanced learners learn Advanced language items, and we don't teach Advanced language items to beginners.

Teaching English through controversial topics
Either for ethical, cultural or economic related issues, EFL coursebooks addressed to teenagers do not usually include topics which may be sensitive. On the contrary, there is a widespread tendency for material writers to design course units around themes such as food, family, the weather, sports, and so on..
