Episode 8: How can I use different languages in my teaching?

Students' home languages should be seen as assets in the English language classroom, but all too often they are viewed as problematic and detrimental. In this episode, the writers of the British Council publication 'Using multilingual approaches: moving from theory to practice' share activities you can use in your classroom that celebrate the languages your students speak.

International Day of Forests

This primary lesson plan helps raise awareness of the importance of forests. It is based on the United Nations' International Day of Forests, which takes place on 21 March every year. Learners think about the biodiversity of forests and learn about the four forest 'layers'. Then they discover what threats forests face and why forests are so important for animals, people and the planet.

Oxymoronic: Can you even attempt to decolonize English teaching?

There is currently a lot of long-overdue discussion about 'decolonization' and the teaching of English. This webinar on 21 March will begin with a brief review of a few important concepts and terms relating to different axes of oppression and hierarchy and how they contribute to the harm that the industry continues to perpetuate. Participants will then have a chance to consider and co-construct ways to resist colonial attitudes and expectations in their daily practice.

Upcycling

Global Recycling Day is on 18 March this year. Why not use this lesson with secondary students to promote upcycling and its role in sustainability? The lesson encourages learners to think about ways in which they can upcycle common objects. They play an upcycling speaking game, where they start thinking creatively about the possibilities that upcycling offers, and then work in pairs or small groups to plan, prepare, research and present their ideas for an upcycling project.
