This week we are happy to announce that episode 5, Greenhouse classes, of our new ten-part podcast 'The Climate Connection' is available to listen to.

A window to the world: Graphic Novels in the Secondary English Classroom

Join us on Friday 16 July for the third in our webinar series 'Using literature with young learners and teenagers', with Laura McWilliams. This webinar reviews the benefits of using graphic novels not just to develop language, but also to focus on global issues and 21st century skills, and then examines how to practically implement this in the secondary classroom in a variety of contexts. We will look at a range of versatile activities and resources easily adapted to any suitable graphic novel.

Participants will leave feeling empowered to exploit this powerful tool in our pedagogical repertoires to its fullest extent.

The Climate Connection episode 5: Greenhouse classes

Episode 5 in our ten-part podcast series exploring the relationship between the climate crisis and language education explores how classrooms themselves can become more environmentally-positive spaces. Stephen Heppell, a world expert in online education and learning spaces, shows how small environmental changes can have a big impact on the learning experience and learning outcomes, and why every child should bring their own plant to school.

Buy. Use. Toss.

In this lesson, secondary learners will think about what happens to the things they throw away. They will categorise some rubbish into 'necessary' and 'luxury' products, read the 'autobiography' of a plastic bottle and write their own story in the same style, and have a final discussion about waste responsibility. The plan and materials can be used in either face-to-face or remote teaching contexts.

Engaging young learners seems to be a neverending topic and we are always in a constant search for effective activities that will practice all four skills. This post by Milica Vukadin explores the characteristics of effective speaking activities, and offers eight activities designed to promote chit-chat in the classroom without putting pressure on young learners to speak.

Word Wall – an excellent vocabulary building technique

Word Wall is usually used in primary classes and very rarely used with middle or senior learners. In this post, Mrs S Akilandeswari discusses the advantages of using Word Wall with older learners, and explains how and when you can use this technique to help your learners expand their vocabulary in fun ways.
