Welcome to the TeachingEnglish newsletter!

We've selected a range of practical resources to help you in the classroom and ideas to help you with your professional development, which we hope you find useful.

The TeachingEnglish team
Plastic-free is not easy
This lesson for secondary learners, at CEFR level A2 and above, raises awareness of how much unnecessary plastic is used in packaging and asks students to look at alternatives. The lesson is based on photographs taken in a local supermarket during a recent campaign which challenged consumers to shop without buying anything in plastic packaging during a week. As well as offering a great context for reviewing the language of food, it also offers a chance to expand on this topic and look at the language used to talk about issues surrounding plastic waste.
At the funfair
Coming into a primary English lesson should always be about having fun. Going to the funfair is an event that more and more children have experienced, whether it be a day-trip to Disneyland or an hour at the travelling funfair, and the large majority know and love the sweets, fast food, rides and balloons. In this lesson learners make flashcards, design a funfair, make a poster, practise speaking and act out a chant.
Energising classes
Video tips is a series of short videos exploring different areas of teaching. Watch interviews with teachers and classroom interaction. This week we feature Dale's tips on energising classes. Do you have days when your learners seem tired or lacking in energy? How do you re-energise them? Watch the video and let us know your ideas!
An interview with Sir Peter
This activity is based on the real story of Merhan Karimi Nasseri, who found himself unable to leave Charles de Gaulle airport in France, but became a popular subject for TV and newspaper interviews. It is a pair-work speaking, listening, reading and writing exercise for students who are at a good intermediate level or above.
Using social networks and media to support our continuing professional development
Many teachers have found that social networks and media can provide valuable support for their continuing professional development. However, knowing where to start can be a problem. How do we set ourselves goals and keep track of where we're going? In this webinar we'll consider practical ways of centring and organising ourselves to make the process a little less chaotic. Watch a recording of this webinar.
