At the beach
Once it starts to get warm, you can easily start to talk about holidays and possible destinations with your young learners. The beach is always a popular destination, and young children can generally, depending on where you are, relate to the excitement and freedom associated with playing on the beach. Read about and try some of these fun activities and songs with your young learners this summer.
Job applications in 2030: Do students have the right skills?
A key role for educators is to prepare students for the workplace, but at a time of great change in the job market, how do we know what to teach? This presentation looks at research into the skills needed for jobs in 2030 – and how English language teachers are ideally placed to cultivate these skills. Watch this talk by Tim Goodier and Mike Mayor on how English language teachers can provide learners with the skills they will need for the future.
School holidays
This is a lesson for teenage learners that can be used as you near the end of term and everyone is looking forward to a long break from school. Students will look back at the academic year that is ending, brainstorm vocabulary connected to holidays and do a class survey. They will also look at holiday jobs and read about holiday trends in the UK. Finally, students will plan their ideal school holiday in groups.
Language and education in Nigeria
This literature review outlines how language of instruction policy and practice currently impact on student learning outcomes in Nigeria. Drawing on the experience of academics, policymakers and programme implementers across the country, the report is the first part of an ongoing joint research project by the British Council, in partnership with UNICEF. The research methodology included focus group discussions with 40 Nigerian discussants from various groups. This publication is free to download in PDF format.
A Midsummer Night's Dream for kids
In this lesson plan, which can be delivered as a 45-minute lesson or as shorter segments over three lessons, learners will be introduced to the Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night's Dream through a short animated video. They will complete comprehension activities and then think about and discuss the ideas of 'dreams' and 'magic' from the play, with the teacher's guidance. Finally, learners will develop their creative writing skills by imagining and writing about either a magical dream or a magic potion or spell.
