Engaging with learning technologies – evaluating and integrating websites
There are a seemingly limitless number of websites out there that have potential benefits for language teaching and learning. In order to maximise these potential benefits, you need to be able to evaluate and select websites effectively. This three-hour, self-study training module provides you with the tools you need to do that. It also gives you practical suggestions for integrating the web in your classroom. Get 50% off when you purchase this module in June.
Using the free digital tool Flipgrid: an incredible experience
Flipgrid is a free digital platform on which your students can upload videos privately in order to share them with the rest of their classmates. The usage of the platform is more than easy, particularly if you use the free mobile app. Students can record themselves with their mobile phones or tablets – they can also use the computer, of course – and they will be able to preview the video before actually sending it to the platform, so if they don't like it, they just have to delete it and do it again. Find out more about how Ingrid Mosquera uses Flipgrid with her trainee English teachers.
Environment
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 June every year and is the United Nation's principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Mark this special day with this lesson plan for young learners. Learners will be introduced to vocabulary to describe environmental issues, watch a story about different environmental issues, sing a song about ways of helping the environment and more.
Mobile learning
What is mobile learning, or m-learning? Watch Chris talk about how he uses mobile devices in class. Read the comments and leave one of your own if you have similar ideas. Watch the video.
Nature Photography Day
This lesson for teenage learners is designed to celebrate Nature Photography Day on 15 June, but can be used any time of the year. Focusing on speaking, vocabulary and writing, the lesson aims to enable students to describe what they see, hear, feel and smell in a natural setting.
WhatsApp and English teaching/learning
Teaching is communicating; teaching is sharing; teaching is upgrading and updating. Teaching happens when there is two-way communication between the teacher(s) and the class/students. The 21st century has been hijacked by digital devices. Our students are netizens, held captive by these digital tools. Their range of knowledge in using these digital tools is mind boggling. In order to march along with our students, we need to match them stride for stride. Read this week's featured blog post to find out ways to put WhatsApp to good use, with some innovative activities.
