Blog of the month award for May 2019
Our featured blog of the month award for May 2019 goes to Cristina Cabal and her post, 'Fixing Fossilized Grammar and Spelling Errors in an Engaging Effective Way'. Do your students repeat the same errors over and over again? Don’t despair! Here’s a fun activity from Cristina Cabal which aims to get rid of them once and for all. Our shortlisted posts this month include a video-based lesson activity and using Google Assistant in the ELT classroom.
Badge builders for Kids
Our stylish badge builders are designed to motivate the kids in your class to do their best in the classroom and earn badges for different skills. Each of your students can choose a blank ‘badge builder’ from one of our four great designs. On each design there is space for ten badges. You can award your students ‘badges’ for good work in different categories at the end of a class or activity. Beneath each badge is a space for the student to write a short sentence to explain what the badge was awarded for. Find badge builders for teens too here.
Powtoon: introducing cartoon videos in the classroom
Your students will enjoy producing their own cartoon videos, with the possibility of adding their own voice or some music. They will adore this free digital tool. Find out more about Powtoon, how to use it, ideas for the classroom and some examples in this week's featured blog post by Ingrid Mosquera.
Hands tied or hands-free? Using constraints creatively in teacher development
Can teachers find freedom in constraint? This presentation by Rose Aylett explores how the innovative limitations of time, language and resources, in both pre-service and in-service teacher education, can reduce stress, combat decision fatigue and promote creative thinking. Discover how placing constraints upon lesson planning and delivery can empower teachers to be able to do much more with much less. Watch a recording.

TeachingEnglish: How to Plan a Great Lesson
Develop your English language teaching skills and learn how to plan and deliver effective English lessons with this free online course. By learning to develop a great lesson, English language teachers give students the best opportunity to retain what they’ve learned. You will look at four professional practices, share your own teaching experiences and apply what you’ve learned to your CPD.
Music is great
This lesson plan for teachers of older teenagers and adults at level B1 explores the theme of music and music festivals, which have become an increasingly popular phenomenon in recent times. The lesson aims to develop speaking and listening skills and provides practice of the sub-skills of reading for gist and reading for specific detail. The students’ own experiences and opinions form the basis of all discussion and extension work.
Exploring Creativity and Imagination game
'Creativity and imagination' is one of six core skills identified by the British Council as very important for students in the 21st century. To give you some tips on how to introduce creativity and imagination into your classroom, British Council India have created this fun, interactive game to get you started. In the game, you will see a series of classroom situations and will answer questions about teaching to support the development of creativity and imagination. You will get feedback on your answers and there is a summary of the key points at the end.
Weird celebrations in the classroom? Why not?
Usually when you are in the classroom, you don’t have the time to organise parties or theme-related events, since you have to cover the material before the end of the school year. With the exception of Christmas and Halloween, there's no other room for any kind of celebration. Or is there? Since our classes have become more multicultural, a special celebration for Christmas, for example, is not always suitable. So how about organising weird day celebrations or events that would make children happy and learn at the same time? Read about some ideas in this week's featured blog post.

At the beach
Once it starts to get warm, you can easily start to talk about holidays and possible destinations with your young learners. The beach is always a popular destination, and young children can generally, depending on where you are, relate to the excitement and freedom associated with playing on the beach. Read about and try some of these fun activities and songs with your young learners this summer.
Job applications in 2030: Do students have the right skills?
A key role for educators is to prepare students for the workplace, but at a time of great change in the job market, how do we know what to teach? This presentation looks at research into the skills needed for jobs in 2030 – and how English language teachers are ideally placed to cultivate these skills. Watch this talk by Tim Goodier and Mike Mayor on how English language teachers can provide learners with the skills they will need for the future.
School holidays
This is a lesson for teenage learners that can be used as you near the end of term and everyone is looking forward to a long break from school. Students will look back at the academic year that is ending, brainstorm vocabulary connected to holidays and do a class survey. They will also look at holiday jobs and read about holiday trends in the UK. Finally, students will plan their ideal school holiday in groups.
Language and education in Nigeria
This literature review outlines how language of instruction policy and practice currently impact on student learning outcomes in Nigeria. Drawing on the experience of academics, policymakers and programme implementers across the country, the report is the first part of an ongoing joint research project by the British Council, in partnership with UNICEF. The research methodology included focus group discussions with 40 Nigerian discussants from various groups. This publication is free to download in PDF format.
A Midsummer Night's Dream for kids
In this lesson plan, which can be delivered as a 45-minute lesson or as shorter segments over three lessons, learners will be introduced to the Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night's Dream through a short animated video. They will complete comprehension activities and then think about and discuss the ideas of 'dreams' and 'magic' from the play, with the teacher's guidance. Finally, learners will develop their creative writing skills by imagining and writing about either a magical dream or a magic potion or spell.
