The TeachingEnglish team | | Using Picturebooks with Children | On 9 November, we are hosting two webinars on the theme of writing and using stories in the ELT primary classroom. Join us at 14.00 UK time for a one-hour talk by Gail Ellis on using picturebooks with primary. This session will show how picturebooks selected from the British Council’s Drawing Words exhibition can be used to help children of primary school age develop English as well as visual and emotional literacy. | | | How to address the effects of trauma in the English language classroom | This article looks at working with students who have suffered trauma and suggests ways in which teachers can address this in the English language classroom. If you are interested to know more about how you can recognise trauma in young and adult learners, what approaches or common mistakes you should avoid when working with traumatised learners, and what other resources or support systems you can call on, then read on. | | | This short lesson plan is intended to provide a supplementary activity for primary learners who have been working on the topic of looking after pets. Learners brainstorm their ideas for what pets need, look at the five types of need and categorise their ideas. They then work together to make a mind map to plan an information poster, and finally produce the poster. | | | Anti-Bullying Week runs from 12 to 16 November, and the theme this year is 'Choose Respect'. In this lesson, students will learn about the problem of bullies and how to behave if you are a bystander. Students begin the lesson by discussing their own attitudes towards bullies, bullying and the role of bystanders. Next, they read two texts about bullies and bystanders. Finally, the students return to their original attitudes. They discuss to what extent our attitudes promote or prevent bullying. As a further optional activity, students prepare a poster for an anti-bullying campaign. | | | Watch Penny Ur in Armenia | From 5 to 7 October 2018, British Council Armenia held its sixth 'Teacher Development with British Council' event by hosting Penny Ur in Armenia.
