TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers
31 January 2018

Welcome to the TeachingEnglish newsletter
Our theme this week is 'inclusivity', and we feature two blog posts - 'The importance of being heard' and 'Teaching presentation skills to promote inclusivity'.

For the classroom, we have inclusive assessment approaches for children, and a lesson plan about online safety for teens to mark Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 6 February.

We also announce a new publication: Teacher evaluation: global perspectives and their implications for English language teaching.

And finally, we invite you to send in your nominations for the ELTon Lifetime Achievement Award.

We hope you find these resources useful.

Assessment is a crucial part of learning. It can be difficult to know how to identify learners with special educational needs (SENs) in the classroom and how to include learners with SENs in the assessment process. This article discusses the challenges and suggests strategies for you to use.

Teaching teens

It is important that online safety is discussed with teenagers, who might not always be aware of dangers, especially in a world in which more and more young people are spending more and more time online. This lesson addresses the topic in a motivating way, allowing students to discuss issues and then do some online activities.

Teaching adults

Everyone knows that adults are people with stable views and opinions, sometimes too critical, sometimes indifferent, today they may be angry and irritated, but tomorrow they are willing to hug the whole world. In this post, Anastasya describes how she started to collect and invent debatable topics for her lessons, and how her student was especially pleased with the possibility to express himself and - even more important - to be heard.

Development

This new publication assesses an international body of educational literature on teacher evaluation and draws on this to make recommendations for the evaluation of teachers in English language teaching.

Events

This is your opportunity to put forward suggestions for the British Council lifetime achievement award, which recognises the long-standing achievement of members of the English language teaching community who have made a significant impact to the field of ELT. To make your suggestions, please send a 100-word paragraph on each nominee you'd like to put forward to eltons@britishcouncil.org by midnight on Friday 2 February.

Working as an ESL teacher and trainer for adults and corporate clients, Alexei Kiselev sometimes needs to provide training for employees to develop or enhance certain language skills vital for the business. One such skill is giving a presentation in English. In this post, he details a framework for a lesson plan that provides an excellent opportunity to engage all students in meaningful interaction regardless of the differences they might have.
