TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers
08 March 2017

Welcome to the TeachingEnglish newsletter

This week we are pleased to announce a webinar to celebrate International Women's Day today - 'Non-gendered language: how to teach it, should we teach it?'

For the classroom we have a useful article on maintaining concentration with primary learners, a lesson on the topic of advertising for teens, and a lesson for adults on brainstorming and evaluating at meetings.

We feature the final three talks from the TESOL Summit 2017, each on the theme of 'The Profession as a Change Agent'.

And finally, The International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF) announces this year's Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDG) competition. Find out more about types of grants, eligibility, and TIRF's current research priorities.

We hope you find these resources useful.

Teaching kids

Do you have trouble maintaining the concentration of your young learners? This article offers some reasons why children might not be listening to you or doing the task they should be, and then provides some solutions to the problems your may be experiencing with classroom management issues. It also offers some tips to help you keep primary children interested in your lesson.

Teaching teens

'Advertisement Storyboard' is a lesson plan for teachers of teenagers and adults at pre-intermediate level and above explores the theme of advertising. There is a discussion on where advertisements can be found. The concept of a storyboard is introduced and an example of a storyboard for an advert is examined in detail. In the final stage of the lesson, students are given the opportunity to produce their own storyboard to advertise a product.

Teaching adults

This lesson covers two of the key language functions of meetings: making suggestions and agreeing/disagreeing. Students practice brainstorming at the same time as exploring possible improvements, and then focus on the necessary follow-up to brainstorming: evaluating ideas. They are also introduced to some useful phrases for making suggestions, agreeing and disagreeing.

Development

Our next free EnglishAgenda webinar celebrates International Women's Day on Wednesday 8 March, 16.00 - 17.00 UK time. The subject of the webinar is 'Non-gendered language: how to teach it, should we teach it?' The webinar will examine gender-neutral language and discuss why the teaching of gender- neutral language should be an important element of the ELT classroom. It will also provide practical examples as to how teachers can integrate teaching of this aspect into their own syllabuses.

Events

The International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF) is pleased to announce its 2017 Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDG) competition. Grants of up to US $5,000 will be made to successful applicants investigating a range of topics in English language education. The application deadline is Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
