TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers
01 March 2017

Welcome to the TeachingEnglish newsletter

This week we feature three more talks from the TESOL Summit 2017 on the future of the ELT profession, on the theme of Reimagining English Competence, and a blog post by David Petrie - 'Action Research - as easy as 1, 2, 3'.

For the classroom, we have a lesson for teens based on the themes of immigration, demography and ethnic minorities - 'A Multicultural Society'. And we have a special lesson plan to mark International Women's Day on 8 March - 'Women in science'.

We also have a new moderated online course starting this week - 'Primary: Discovering creative classrooms'.

And, finally, take a look at a recording of a very interesting and practical webinar with Tran Thi Hieu Thuy and Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong on the topic of enhancing teacher reflection.

We hope you find these resources useful.

'Primary: Discovering creative classrooms' is a 15-hour moderated online course designed to help you gain resource-making ideas and develop a wide range of skills and activities for everyday use in your primary classroom. The course starts Thursday, 02 March.

Teaching teens

'A Multicultural Society' is a lesson based around the different ethnic minority groups which make up the UK population. There are a range of reading and discussion tasks, which enable students to reflect on their own culture and minorities within it. It is suitable for learners aged 12 + at B2 level, and students will develop speaking skills, reading skills and critical thinking skills.

Teaching adults

To celebrate International Women's Day on March 8, our latest lesson plan for teens and adults raises awareness of some of the reasons why women are relatively poorly represented in science. This lesson for adults or older teens at B2 level, focuses on reference words, and how they link a text together, and speaking skills development on the topic of jobs and gender.

Development

In this webinar recording 'Enhancing the quality of reflection', from last year's Teaching for Success Online conference Tran Thi Hieu Thuy and Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong review the concept of reflection and Brookfield's theory of four lenses in critically reflective teaching practice. They also propose guidelines for
teachers to apply useful tools for reflection in each lens.

Events

How can we overcome the native speaker as the standard and address the changing realities of English language use around the world, both with regard to students' needs for English and to teachers' needs for proficiency in English? Watch recordings of three 15-minute presentations on the theme of Reimagining
English Competence by Anne Katz (Inquiry), Giselle Lundy-Ponce (Equity), and Ahmar Mahboob (Professionalism).

Magazine

'Action Research - as easy as 1, 2, 3' by David Petrie answers three basic questions: What is action research? Why do it? How do I do it? To find out more about getting started with action research, take a look at this very accessible and practical blog post.
