TeachingEnglish newsletter 08 June 2016

TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers
08 June 2016

Welcome to the TeachingEnglish newsletter!
Following the ELTons award ceremony on 02 June, this week we announce the winners of this year's innovation awards.

We also announce the call for proposals for the British Council's first global online conference - Teaching for Success, which will take place on 5 to 9 October 2016.

For the classroom this week, we have a practical article on the topic of using the phonemic chart with Young Learners; a set of learning resources, 'Young market traders' at two levels for teens; and a travel review activity for adults.

And, finally, we have an interesting article by Karen Waterston about teacher training with minimal resources in Mongolia.

We hope you find these resources useful.

Teaching kids

'Young learners and the phonemic chart' is an article which gives reasons why it is useful to use the chart with children, background information, and practical activities for you to try. Perhaps if we start using the chart with learners from a young age, they will be more comfortable with phonemic script and see the
benefits of it when they are older and more self-aware.

Teaching teens

Young market traders is a complete set of teaching resources designed around interesting and unusual photographs with activities to activate your students'
higher level critical thinking skills. This pack deals with the topics of travel, lifestyle, childhood and child labour and practises both listening and speaking skills. There are resources for lower levels and

Teaching adults

Holiday destinations travel review is an activity for pre-intermediate students, which follows on from a presentation and controlled practice of the
comparative and provides extended practice of this structure. It engages the students visually and integrates all four skills. The students will produce a
newspaper travel review of two 'island' destinations. The end product is authentic looking and the process very motivating and fun.

Development

The Teaching for Success Online Conference will take place from 5 - 9 October 2016 and and is the British Council's first global online CPD conference for teachers and teacher educators. The conference will focus on the British Council's CPD Framework for teachers and CPD Framework for teacher educators. These frameworks form part of the British Council's wider Teaching for Success approach. Find out how you can be a part of it!

Events

The ELTons are the only international awards that recognise and celebrate innovation in English language teaching (ELT). The winners for this year were announced at a special award ceremony on 02 June in London. Find out who all the winners were from this year's ELTons awards.

Magazine

Teaching with minimal resources can seem a daunting prospect for those of us lucky enough to work with coursebooks, photocopiers, audio and IT facilities in
our schools. Read Karen Waterston's article about how she adapted to working in north-east Mongolia, where she ran an in-service teacher training course.
