TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers
03 February 2016

Welcome to the TeachingEnglish newsletter!
Continuing with our celebrations of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, this week we feature a lesson for adults which introduces learners to the features of Shakespearean comedy.

For teens we have a NEW lesson looking at the topic of online safety, and for those of you teaching Young Learners, we have a NEW article on teaching reading which offers tips and advice on how to do this well.

If you're looking to develop your skills as a teacher, take a look at our TeachingEnglish radio series, and a recent blog post on the topic of increasing learner motivation through setting goals.

And finally, we announce The First Annual Latin American Conference for Teacher-research in ELT to be held in Santiago, Chile in March this year.

We hope you find these resources useful.

Teaching kids

In this article 'Reading and Young Learners' Wendy Arnold and Fiona Malcolm explore why we need to develop reading skills with young learners and offer tips and advice on how we can do it.

Teaching teens

It is important that online safety is discussed with teenagers who might not always be aware of dangers, especially in a world in which more and more young
people are spending more and more time online. This lesson addresses this issue in a motivating way.

Teaching adults

This lesson 'Shakespeare and comedy' provides students with an introduction to the features of Shakespearean comedy, highlighting the similarities between what contemporary audiences find funny and Shakespeare's humour.

Development

TeachingEnglish radio is a series of audio programmes to help you develop your skills as a teacher. Choose from a range of useful topics: Working with a big class, Games in the classroom, Songs and rhymes, Projects and more. Each programme comes with an audio file and worksheet.
Events

Teacher-researchers in schools and other educational institutions across Latin America are warmly invited to The First Annual Latin American Conference for Teacher-research in ELT in Santiago, Chile on Saturday 19 March 2016.

Leading up to the event the next IATEFL Research SIG online discussion will have a corresponding Latin American theme. Find out more on the IATEFL Research SIG

Magazine

Read Larry Ferlazzo's blog - Increasing Motivation Through Students Setting Goals. Extensive research has shown that a scaffolded and supported goal setting process, particularly one where students choose their own goals, enhances student motivation and academic achievement, and specifically helps in developing second-language proficiency.
