Using arts and crafts in the classroom can be an excellent way to facilitate language learning with young learners. Here are some reasons why these types of activities can enrich the learning experience for your students, followed by some practical considerations to bear in mind when teaching English through arts and crafts.

Teaching teens

'A new flag?' is a lesson plan for older teenagers and adults at CEF level B1 and above looks at the symbolism and meaning of flags. This lesson is topical for November as New Zealand is holding a referendum on choosing a new design for its flag. In part one students discuss and design a new flag for their country. In part two they will consider issues around the referendum.

Teaching adults

Many students, especially at intermediate level, express the feeling that they are not making any progress. This is because their progress is not as noticeable as it was when they started learning English. In this article 'Negotiated objectives' find out how to to compile a negotiated list of objectives with the students to try to help them see their progress more clearly and thus become more motivated.

Development

This week we feature the 12th and final professional practice from our new CPD framework 'Understanding educational policies and practices'. Find resources to help you with this professional practice.

And take a look at our 'Steps to Success' self-study online course suitable for pre-service or newly-qualified teachers working in the primary, secondary, tertiary or the private ELT sectors.
