LearnEnglish Kids Newsletter

British Council
LearnEnglish Kids Newsletter
January 2015

Welcome to the latest LearnEnglish Kids newsletter.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Celebrate the start of 2015 with our Time for another year song. Children can sing along and then practise the months of the year with the downloadable worksheet. Kids can also tell us what they did for New Year's Eve on our New Year's Eve Your turn.

Many people will start 2015 by making New Year's resolutions, for example, 'This year I'm going to speak more English.' Kids can write on the site and share their ideas on our New Year's resolutions Your turn.

Whatever your plans or resolutions, we wish all our users a great 2015!

NATIONAL STORYTELLING WEEK
National Storytelling Week starts on 31st January in the UK. On LearnEnglish Kids, we have lots of animated short stories for children to watch and read, each with a printable worksheet to use at home or in class.

Kids can also create their own story to print and read to their family and friends with our Story maker activity. Then they can tell us about what they like reading on our Reading Your turn

Parents can find articles about reading for younger children and older children in our parents' section. Teachers can read an article on using the LearnEnglish Kids short stories in class, and an article on Storytelling in young learner classes on our sister site, TeachingEnglish.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!
Have you seen the new videos on LearnEnglish Kids? George and the dragon, Beatrix Potter, The bird king and The lion and the mouse are great new stories from our British tales and Story Time collections.

If you and your children enjoyed them, you can find more of these stories on our new LearnEnglish Kids: Playtime app for iOS.

We've also added two new parents' articles and updated some of the existing ones in our Helping your child section.

We'd love to know what you and your children think of these stories, articles and the LearnEnglish Kids site! Write to us at: learnenglish.kids@britishcouncil.org

WRITING SKILLS
We have lots of activities on our site to help children practise their writing skills at home or in the classroom.

Our Your turn section has more than 60 different topics that children can write about, and each page has questions to help them decide what to write. Many of the topics also have printable worksheets to help develop ideas and language. Kids must be a member of LearnEnglish Kids to write on the site. When they have joined, they can practise writing by adding comments on any song, story, game or activity they try! All comments are pre-moderated to help make the site a safe place.

To help improve their spelling while writing, our Speak and spell section has lots of stories to introduce children to spelling in English, as well as special Tricky words games to practise words which are difficult to spell.

Teachers can read about encouraging children to develop their writing skills in the Kids and writing article on our sister site, TeachingEnglish.
