British Council MOOC reaches 100,000 registrations
                                     
A record number of people from around the world have joined the British Council's new course 'Exploring English: Language and Culture' and it's not too late for learners to sign up. The course is delivered on the FutureLearn social learning platform, a UK-based provider of Massive Open Online Courses [MOOCs] in the global higher education sector. The British Council's new MOOC for English language learners has attracted the highest number of registrations for a FutureLearn course to date, and helped the platform reach new global audiences.

Winners of the 2014 Annual Language Learner Literature Awards announced

                                     

 

The Extensive Reading Foundation (ERF), an unaffiliated, not-for-profit organization that supports and promotes extensive reading in language education, have announced the winners of the 11th Annual Language Learner Literature (LLL) Awards for books published in 2013. An international jury chose the finalists in five book categories, taking into account online votes and comments of students and teachers around the world. The winning books were announced at the CLESOL (Community Languages and ESOL) conference in Wellington, New Zealand, July 2014.

Webinar on becoming a plenary keynote speaker

The Fair List is running their first ever webinar, in collaboration with the IATEFL Leadership and Management Special Interest Group, on 'Preparing for your first keynote talk or plenary'. All are welcome to attend and it is especially aimed at women who are thinking about dipping their toes in these waters for the first time. The speakers will be Susan Barduhn and Simon Greenall. All those attending the webinar will have the opportunity to put in a proposal for a webinar of their own to Cambridge English Teacher (CET). If their proposal is selected they will have the chance to do their first plenary via audio-only webinar with help from a supportive CET moderator.

This lesson is about the first ever air attacks on Britain, which occurred during the First World War. It provides students with reading practice in the form of a graded authentic text and listening practice based on a short podcast with authentic eyewitness accounts of Zeppelin attacks.

The outbreak of war

This lesson uses information gaps to create a speaking activity in which students recount three different eyewitness accounts of the outbreak of war in 1914. Students work in groups of three, with each describing the experiences of a different person. The lesson then features study of the past tenses used in these three accounts, and students again compare notes in groups of three to check their answers.

English Language Teacher Educator Conference 2015 - Hyderabad: Call for papers

                               
British Council and English and Foreign Languages University in India co-host an annual conference for English Language Teacher Educators. This event is considered to be the world's largest English Language Teacher Educator Conference and is now in its fifth year. The conference will be held again at Hyderabad International Convention Centre, Hyderabad, India from 27 February - 1 March 2015. The theme of the conference is Ensuring Quality in English Language Teacher Education.
