Seminar - Practical guidance on training students to cope with authentic spoken English

The British Council works closely with universities and other research institutions to fund and publish ELT research. The Research Papers series gathers together the outputs of these partnerships and collaborations. This volume gathers together research published since 2009. This volume also includes reports of research not conducted within the Partnership scheme.

Phrasal verbs with get 

    TeachingEnglishTry                   
This lesson is a self-contained lesson which presents ten phrasal verbs in the context of a dialogue. Students focus on the meaning of those phrasal verbs through a vocabulary and meaning matching exercise. Students then do controlled and freer writing practice of the phrasal verbs. In the speaking activity students use the phrasal verbs in a less controlled way.

Gerunds and infinitives: Farmer Jones and his wife

This activity looks at the problem of whether verbs are followed by the gerund or infinitive. At Upper Intermediate level (B2 on the CEF level and FCE Cambridge exams) students are confronted with this problem and it is often useful to practise more thoroughly to help the difference in meaning of the verbs become part of the learners' active knowledge.
