This week we announce a series of four brand new Britlit kits starting with Jackie Kay's story My Daughter, The Fox together with an opportunity to meet the writing team in Russia - check out the video below.

Britlit Russia:  meet the team
 

Check out our great new Britlit kit and watch an interview with the Britlit writing team in Russia. A series of four kits have been written by school and university teachers from Russia, under the guidance of Alan Pulverness and co-ordinated by the British Council, Russia. Alan and members of the project team can be seen discussing the work and their involvement in this video made by the British Council, Russia.

Britlit kit - My Daughter, The Fox

Jackie Kay's story My Daughter, The Fox gives the reader an unusual view of the mother/child relationship. As the title suggests, the narrator's daughter isn't human, but the feelings generated between mother and daughter are universal and so the scene is set for the paradox to be played out. The story is read by Sarah Mount.

Lesson plan - Cooking in Britain Today

This lesson consists of a series of activities to help students talk about food and cooking. The main focus of the lesson is a text based on a recent survey in the UK indicating that British people are becoming more adventurous and experimental in their cooking and eating habits due to the growing popularity of cooking programmes. This lesson should challenge stereotypes of British food and encourage students to discuss their own preferences and attitudes towards food and restaurants.

 Who cares about English? Panel discussion recording

  

The British Council and the Oxford English Dictionary sponsored a discussion with an expert panel to discuss the state of the English language on Thursday 27 September 2012. The event considered issues such as: Does 'standard English' exist in today's globalised society? Who regulates the language - lexicographers, the education system, the media - or the public? Is the language being dumbed down? And does this matter? Should we be worried about the state of English today?
