Welcome to another TeachingEnglish newsletter. This week we have the usual selection of activities, articles and ready made lesson plans to help you with your teaching. There is an article on using portfolios in ELT and the opportunity to try using them in your own class with an activity which looks at the biography section of portfolios. There has been much literature written about them and there are lots of interesting examples. In the year 2001, which was also the European Year of Languages, The Council of Europe launched ELPs throughout Europe. Read more Working with biographies The Biography section of portfolios is a documentation of the learners' personal language learning history and can include, for example, a short narrative about the summer camp they attended and for which they may include a certificate of attendance in the passport section. Read More Simple project work ideas The following are projects to be carried out with our 16-17 year-old students in the last year of secondary education. Each project aims at rounding up a set of topics connected with different school subjects. At the moment we're working on the first project listed below. I'm already looking forward to sharing the outcomes with you in the future! Read More Speaking better When teaching English, I remember my own learning trick in 4 other languages (a hobby). The best advice is to train the ear to listen to sentences or whole phrases, and not get stuck on words. The ear doesn't evaluate every word in speaking, but "parcels" of information. So one asks oneself did I understand what the speaker was saying? in broad terms.
