Seeing Black: How to build anti-racism into teaching English publications

In recent years, much has been done to increase diversity in publications. However, research shows that the use of what are considered diverse images can still perpetuate oppressive narratives. While race as a social concept has existed for centuries, little is said of race in the arena of TEFL. This webinar centres race and the representation of Black people in particular. Join us on 5 May for this webinar looking at race in teaching English materials.

English Language Day 2022

English Language Day on 23 April is also when we celebrate William Shakespeare's birthday. To mark this special day, we put together a list of resources to help you introduce Shakespeare into your primary or secondary English language classrooms. Introduce your young learners to well-known and popular Shakespeare plays through short animated videos, or use our secondary resources to discuss key Shakespearian themes and characters.

Sense of humour

Celebrate World Laughter Day on 3 May by bringing fun and humour into your classrooms. Comic strips can be used from beginner level to advanced level with most age groups for a variety of language and discussion activities. They are powerful teaching tools and can be used to tell a complex story in a few images; provide comment and provoke thought on events and issues; show culture in action with the ways that we should and shouldn't behave; and much more. Teaching pathways: Skills for remote teaching

In this practical course, you will develop the skills you need for remote teaching and reflect on how they relate to your learners' learning. You will learn about different approaches to remote teaching and consider what factors make the transition from the physical to online classroom successful. The course lasts for five weeks, and each module involves approximately three hours of study. Registration is open until 9 May.

English language teaching, learning and assessment in South Asia

This series of reports provides an overview of how English language teaching, learning and assessment are currently situated within school-level education in South Asia. The authors draw on policy documentation, research studies and a small number of interviews and focus groups to provide an overall picture of the current scenario. There are five country reports in total, and each report is free to download.

What is creativity in the classroom?

Between April and November 2022, Claire Steele and Sarah Smith from eltonix will be running a series of six webinars looking at different aspects of creativity in the language classroom. In the first webinar, taking place on 28 April, session participants will be able to explore what a creative classroom looks like by discussing what creativity is and exploring some ideas and techniques for how to make the most of opportunities to engage students in creative thought.

Mother Earth Day

In this lesson for primary learners aged 6–8, children learn about the United Nations' Mother Earth Day, celebrated on 22 April each year. Learners brainstorm ideas about the things our planet gives us, practise simple science and nature vocabulary, use the present simple to describe facts and make their own drawings with text or posters to share their ideas.

Easter

Children love learning about festivals and the way other people celebrate them. Easter is one such festival and is widely celebrated by children across the world, so it is interesting from a cross-cultural point of view to develop at least a few activities related to eggs, bunnies and hot cross buns! Choose from these fun craft activities, games, stories and rhymes for primary learners of all ages.
