TeachingEnglish Teachers Happy New Year and welcome to the first TeachingEnglish newsletter of 2022! To start the year, we bring you news of three practical teacher development opportunities. First, we invite you to register for our free, online course, 'Teaching pathways: How to teach speaking'. We also bring you six short videos to help you consider how you integrate ICT in your own professional development and in your classroom teaching. And finally, for those of you who teach teenagers, we bring news of a practical webinar on 13 January: Increasing the level of challenge in teenage classes. For the classroom, we kick off the year with calendar-based activities for lower-level learners, and a lesson plan for higher-level learners on the topics of New Year celebrations and resolutions. And finally, we're happy to announce that the third episode, 'How can I ensure my teaching is inclusive?', in our new podcast series is available to download and listen to. We hope you find these resources useful. The TeachingEnglish team | |

Teaching pathways: How to teach speaking In this practical four-week course, you will develop your understanding of speaking skills and explore teaching techniques and activities which promote oral communication in the classroom for a range of ages and levels. This free course starts on 11 January 2022. |

| English Teaching Talks: Integrating ICT In this series of six short videos, Nik Peachey provides a framework to help us think about integrating ICT (information and communication technology), sources and the motivation for using ICT for our professional development, practical ideas to build both language and digital literacies in the classroom, criteria to help choose the best apps for your learners and guidance on how to plan blended work. |

Challenge and Cognition: Increasing the level of challenge in teenage classes To better challenge our teenage learners, and appeal to different abilities in the classroom, teachers must incorporate mastery and development tasks. Mastery tasks are mastered by all learners in a short period of time, regardless of prior learning, but developmental tasks stretch learners and develop cognitive skills. Join Sarah Smith and Claire Steele in this webinar on 13 January 2022 to find out more about raising the level of challenge. |

| Episode 3: How can I ensure my teaching is inclusive? In the third episode of our new, ten-part podcast series, we consider how to make sure teaching is inclusive. In this episode, teachers involved in the British Council's innovative Teaching for All programme in South Africa share approaches which can promote inclusivity, particularly in diverse classrooms communities. Leading inclusivity expert Anne Margaret Smith then shares her ideas about how these strategies can be adapted and adopted in your own teaching context. |

Calendar-based activities Make a class calendar and use these fun activities with your primary learners to revise the words for days and months, introduce ordinal numbers and practise listening comprehension. You can also use your calendar to practise writing the date on the board and celebrate your learners' birthdays throughout the year. |
|---|
| New Year's resolutions Use this activity with low-level students to talk about their New Year's resolutions and practise 'going to'. Or, use this lesson plan with higher-level learners to reflect on what makes a year good or bad, discuss how they celebrated the New Year and their resolutions for 2022. |
