TeachingEnglish Teachers Welcome to this week's edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter! This week we are delighted to announce the new British Council TeachingEnglish podcast series. Check out our first episode! We also announce two upcoming online events: a webinar on project work for secondary learners, and a 90-minute session exploring English as a medium of education (EME) in higher education (HE). As winter descends on the northern hemisphere, engage your primary learners in making snowflakes and decorating your classroom before the holidays; and/or try this week's featured lesson plan about the winter solstice. And finally, take a look at some of the other 2021 British Council ELTons awards and their winners, and video recordings of the ceremony and interviews from this year's hybrid event. We hope you find these resources useful. The TeachingEnglish team | |

Episode 1: How can I integrate global issues into my teaching? In this new, ten-part podcast series from the British Council, we try and provide solutions to some of the key questions being asked by English teachers around the world. Each episode explores a specific topic through interviews, a focus on recent developments and reports on British Council initiatives in English language teaching. Practical show notes and transcripts are available to download. |

| Webinar: Project work in the secondary classroom Are you looking for a way to keep your secondary students interested and motivated in class? In this session, we will examine how a project-based approach can increase student engagement and promote collaborative learning, as well as provide a setting in which students practise their language skills in an authentic way, with genuine reasons for communication. Join us on 9 December for a webinar with Tashya Mitchell looking at project work with teenagers. |

English in higher education: challenges, opportunities, current practice and future trends This 90-minute session on 1 December will explore English as a medium of education (EME) in higher education (HE), looking at the challenges and opportunities EME presents for learners, teachers and decision makers, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We will look at current practice in LMIC contexts and potential future trends in EME in HE. |

| Let's make snowflakes In this lesson, primary students watch a story about snow before learning how to fold and cut paper in patterns to make snowflakes, to decorate the classroom or to make a card to celebrate the holiday season. You can extend the lesson by making a snowman with your students, and use the winter colouring page as a festive way to keep early finishers of other activities busy. |

The solstice In this lesson, older primary students learn about an important event on our planet – the December solstice, which occurs on 21 December. It is the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and the longest day of the year in the southern hemisphere. Teachers explain the phenomenon using a ball and light source, before discussing the diagram on the worksheet with students, who complete a gapped text. Students consolidate and extend their understanding with a reading and further activities about the seasons. |
