TeachingEnglish Teachers

Welcome to the final edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter of 2021!

This week we invite you to register for our free, online course, 'Gender in language education'.

We're also happy to announce that the second episode, 'How can I make my teaching gender-fair?' in our new podcast series is available to download and listen to.

We bring you a very interesting webinar on Friday 17 December, which explores teacher identity and agency by looking at teachers' values, capabilities and aspirations.

For the classsroom, we have a new lesson for teenagers and adults that explores race equality and unconscious bias; and some fun, festive activities for primary learners.

And finally, we have a new report into teachers with disabilities for you to download.

We hope you find these resources useful.

We wish you all a safe and peaceful break, and we will be back in 2022 with more resources and development opportunities for you.

Episode 2: How can I make my teaching gender-fair?

In the 2nd episode of our new, ten-part podcast series, we consider how to make classrooms gender-fair places. First, we look at the three modules of the British Council MOOC, 'Gender in language education': Gender representation in teaching materials, Understanding gender equality in teaching practice and Working with Gender equality in Education; then gender expert and educator Bhavna Gupta identifies simple ways in which all teachers can ensure that all students are given equal opportunities.

Exploring teacher agency and identity through the Tree of Life approach

Teachers need to be recognised as experts within the ELT sector. They often feel not valued enough, and this has an impact on their motivation and, consequently, on their performance. In this webinar we explore teacher identity and agency by looking at teachers' values, capabilities and aspirations. Join us on 17 December for a webinar with Maria Grazia Imperiale exploring teacher agency and identity through the Tree of Life approach.

The school that tried to end racism

Use this lesson to explore race equality and unconscious bias with your secondary and adult learners at CEFR B2 and above. The lesson plan is based around a UK documentary called 'The school that tried to end racism' and focuses on a project in a school in London in which 12- and 13-year-old students were tested for unconscious race bias, and then took part in a series of activities designed to tackle racism. In this lesson, students will watch a short clip from the documentary, read a text about the project and focus on collocations.

TeachingEnglish Teachers

Welcome to this week's edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter!

This week we are delighted to announce the new British Council TeachingEnglish podcast series. Check out our first episode!

We also announce two upcoming online events: a webinar on project work for secondary learners, and a 90-minute session exploring English as a medium of education (EME) in higher education (HE).

As winter descends on the northern hemisphere, engage your primary learners in making snowflakes and decorating your classroom before the holidays; and/or try this week's featured lesson plan about the winter solstice.

And finally, take a look at some of the other 2021 British Council ELTons awards and their winners, and video recordings of the ceremony and interviews from this year's hybrid event.

We hope you find these resources useful.

Webinar: Project work in the secondary classroom

Are you looking for a way to keep your secondary students interested and motivated in class? In this session, we will examine how a project-based approach can increase student engagement and promote collaborative learning, as well as provide a setting in which students practise their language skills in an authentic way, with genuine reasons for communication. English in higher education: challenges, opportunities, current practice and future trends

This 90-minute session on 1 December will explore English as a medium of education (EME) in higher education (HE), looking at the challenges and opportunities EME presents for learners, teachers and decision makers, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We will look at current practice in LMIC contexts and potential future trends in EME in HE.

Let's make snowflakes

In this lesson, primary students watch a story about snow before learning how to fold and cut paper in patterns to make snowflakes, to decorate the classroom or to make a card to celebrate the holiday season. You can extend the lesson by making a snowman with your students, and use the winter colouring page as a festive way to keep early finishers of other activities busy.

The solstice

In this lesson, older primary students learn about an important event on our planet – the December solstice, which occurs on 21 December. It is the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and the longest day of the year in the southern hemisphere. Teachers explain the phenomenon using a ball and light source, before discussing the diagram on the worksheet with students, who complete a gapped text. Students consolidate and extend their understanding with a reading and further activities about the seasons.
