Winter
Find lots of resources to create a winter project with your young learners. For example, use a printable Santa-shaped advent calendar where learners can draw a different Christmas object in each circle and learn numbers up to 24. Or, make a snowflake finger puppet and teach them a rhyme. There are also useful links to games for winter weather, activities and songs. Read more.
Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
One has to keep in mind that skills such as Creativity and Imagination, Collaboration, Critical thinking, Citizenship, Student Leadership and Digital Literacies cannot be taught or learnt in isolation. These are the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) which need teachers to practice them as well while teaching. Content is the bedrock on which teachers can help students to develop these skills. Read our latest blog post for some interesting activities that provide focus on these ‘21st century skills’.
Featured blog of the month for November 2018
Our featured blog of the month award for November 2018 goes to ELT-Cation and their post One sentence games. In this post, ELT-Cation shares suggestions for games and activities that begin with just one sentence, but generate hours of language learning. Shortlisted posts are Steve Smith's The Age Factor in Learning, Clare Voke English for Asia Blog and Five 21st Century Skills TEFL Teachers can no longer ignore, and Cristina Cabal with Cloze Test Activity, Blog de Cristina's Style.
Christmas presents and decorations
As the festive season approaches, you may want to get your younger learners making decorations for your classroom. In this lesson children practise Christmas words with flashcards and online games. They then make a Christmas craft - a snowflake, snowman or Christmas tree - and enjoy a Christmas song or story.
Critical Material For Critical Thinking
What is critical thinking? Dr. Richard Paul defines it as, ‘the art of analyzing and evaluating thinking with a view to improving it.’ To me, critical thinking has always been about looking at something, whether a poem, a piece of art, or an idea, appreciating what is good about it, and questioning what I felt was not good about it, while trying to keep an open mind to the opinions of others, but maintaining my own independent opinion. Read Zahra Zuhair's post for more on practical possibilities for critical thinking in every day lessons.
