TeachingEnglish newsletter 20 September 2017

TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers
20 September 2017

Welcome to the TeachingEnglish newsletter.
This week we have an interesting, freely downloadable report which looks at opportunities and challenges for English-medium instruction in low- and middle-income contexts.

We have a new online moderated course, 'Exploring content and language integrated learning (CLIL)', which starts on 17 October.

We also announce the call for applications for our ELTons awards for innovation in ELT.

For the classroom this week, we have a lively activity to revise vocabulary - Hot seat; a warmer activity - Happy graph; and a couple of activities aimed at raising awareness of sounds and spelling - Homophone dictation and Homophone game.

We hope you find these resources useful.

Teaching kids

'Hot seat' is a good activity for getting your students going in the morning. It is also excellent for revising vocabulary. It is a very lively activity and can be adapted to different class sizes.

Teaching teens

'Happy graph' is a valuable warmer activity for any teenage class. It gives the students the chance to get to know you a little more and it gives you the opportunity to find out about how your students are feeling before you start your lesson.

Teaching adults

Homophones can be one of the reasons students spell or hear something incorrectly. This dictation activity needs little preparation and allows students to notice these problems.

is a natural follow-on from the dictation and can be used to help the students practise and remember homophones.

Development

Our latest moderated online training course, Exploring content and language integrated learning (CLIL), begins on 17 October 2017. This 12-hour course will help you teach your subject more effectively in English. Work with one of our qualified, experienced moderators and other participants to develop strategies for balancing language and conceptual demands in your classroom practice.

Events

The ELTons are the only international awards that recognise and celebrate innovation in English language teaching (ELT). Applications for the 2018 awards are now open until 3 November. The categories we are inviting applications for are as follows: Excellence in Course Innovation, Innovation in Learner Resources, Innovation in Teacher Resources, Digital Innovation, and Local Innovation.

Magazine

This freely downloadable report, 'Multilingual classrooms: opportunities and challenges for English medium instruction in low and middle income contexts', reviews the global literature on medium of instruction and learning. The report proposes multilingual strategies to support EMI, and provides recommendations to different stakeholders to maximise educational outcomes. This report is just one of the resources available for the professional practice 'Using multilingual approaches'.
