TeachingEnglish newsletter 07 October 2015

TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers
07 October 2015

Welcome to the latest newsletter from TeachingEnglish!
This week we announce a webinar with Ian Clifford, British Council Burma discussing whether learner-centred approaches work in every culture.

To celebrate World Teachers' Day on 5th October, we have created a collection of a range of useful resources on various themes for you to read, watch and use.

For the classroom, we have a brand new integrated speaking lesson for adults, a great picture story lesson for kids, and a First Certificate listening skills development lesson for teens.

The featured professional practice from our new CPD framework this week is 'Using inclusive practices'.

And finally, registration for our courses 'CLIL Essentials' and 'TKT Essentials' is now open.

We hope you find these resources useful.

Teaching kids

Create a picture story with your young learners using this lesson plan 'Draw a story' and a story from LearnEnglish Kids. This lesson uses a wonderful idea from Chris Riddell, currently the 'children's laureate', of turning children into illustrators.

Teaching teens

This lesson plan for teachers of teenage students at level B2 is about food festivals. Students will focus on their listening skills in preparation for part 2 of the FCE listening test. Through
a series of activities students will become more aware of what to 'notice' in a gap fill listening exercise, enabling them to do the Listening part 2 more successfully.

Teaching adults

This is an integrated speaking lesson for higher level adults that involves them taking different roles depending the colour of their hat. In the 1980s Edward de Bono came up with his Six Thinking Hats idea, in which businessmen use a parallel thinking process which helps them become 'more productive, focused, and mindfully involved'. A similar process can be used effectively in the English classroom to get learners more involved in discussions.

Development

This week we feature the professional practice from our new CPD framework 'Using inclusive practices'. Find resources to help you with this professional practice.

We are also pleased to announce that registration is open for CLIL Essentials
 and TKT Essentials

Events

Do learner-centred approaches work in every culture? Is it time to challenge Western assumptions about education, especially when it comes to promoting 'good teaching approaches' in the developing world? On Monday 12th October at 13.30 UK time, the British Council's Ian Clifford looks at the case of Burma, in a webinar which will be of interest to those involved in teacher development.

Magazine

World Teachers' Day was on October 5th. To celebrate the event for 2015, we gathered a number of useful resources from across the site into one place. Check out resources on
themes of motivation, teaching mixed-level classes, making activities communicative, preparing learners for exams, and giving effective feedback.
