Welcome to the latest edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter!

This week we have an engaging lecture on the English of Shakespeare and an interview with Tessa Woodward about the Fair List.

For the classroom we have a primary lesson plan on the theme of Environment and an interesting advertisement storyboard task for older learners.

We also announce the winners of the British Council Master Dissertation Award, and a new volume of English Language Teacher Education and Development (ELTED).

We hope you find these useful.

Best wishes

The lecture, with Ben Crystal, marked the 450th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare and gives a fascinating insight into how Shakespeare might have wanted his lines pronounced. Actor and author Ben Crystal explores the accent, the theatrical conventions, and the world of Shakespeare, to reveal a bright and beautiful English.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to vocabulary to describe environmental issues. They will watch a story about different environmental issues and sing a song about ways of helping the environment. They will practise using 'should' and 'shouldn't' to talk about helping the environment, and think about what they do or can do, by playing a game and conducting a class survey. Finally, they will talk about recycling and either make a poster or write a poem, and do a recycling craft activity.

In this lesson students produce a storyboard for an advertisement. It's suitable for pre-intermediate level and above. The exercises in this lesson introduce some of the elements of advertisements such as slogans. There is a discussion on where advertisements can be found. The concept of a storyboard is introduced and an example of a storyboard for an advert is examined in detail. In the final stage of the lesson, students are given the opportunity to produce their own storyboard to advertise a product. Extension tasks are also suggested.
