This week we have news of the long-awaited Special Educational Needs course, plus a series of webinars! We also have 2 talks on the issues faced when working in a bilingual environment.

 

We have a brand new publication on the challenges in transition from primary to secondary schooling in ELT, and a webinar on Monday 18 November on how you can use the European Profiling Grid.

Special Educational Needs (SEN): New training course and webinars 
                                 

In December, the Special Educational Needs (SEN) online training course goes live with a weeklong series of fivewebinars. The SEN course is for teachers working in mainstream contexts and focuses on different areas of Special Educational Needs (SEN) providing teachers with an understanding of SEN and practical strategies ensuring all learners have access to curriculum and learning. Our activity on SEN is also part of our contribution to the UN Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd.

Building bridges between content and language: talks by Keith Kelly and Phil Ball

In February 2013, The British Council welcomed leading international CLIL experts Keith Kelly and Philip Ball to Madrid to discuss with teachers the issues faced when working in a bilingual environment. During the talks, they looked at questions such as language issues facing subject teachers teaching in English as well as what language teachers need to consider when incorporating content.

Richard Rossner will give a free webinar: 'Assessing language teaching competences: the potential of the European Profiling Grid (EPG)' on Monday 18th November 2013. In this webinar, the background and aims of the EPG and the layout and content of both its printed and digital versions will be outlined. This will be followed by a summary of ways in which the EPG can be used and a question-answer session.

Key factors and challenges in transition from primary to secondary schooling in ELT: an international perspective
                                
This paper addresses important issues relating to the transition from primary to secondary school: how learners and teachers of English experience that change and how schools can help. The research project received funding from the British Council's English Language Teaching Research Award.

PopuLLar: Motivating secondary school students to learn languages through their music 

                           

PopuLLar is a European education project that uses music to motivate language learning in secondary school students as an authentic use of language and semi-autonomous project. The project asks students to write their own lyrics to songs of their choice in the target language they are learning.
