This week we have a live-streamed reading and music event to celebrate 200 years of Jane Austen. We also have an upcoming webinar to help you prepare your students for the IELTS speaking test.

 

For the classroom we have complete sets of resources for high and low level learners - Using images, and an activity which involves students writing questions for online 'robots'. 

 

And finally, we have a debate about the future of the teaching profession and a seminar for teachers working in EAL.

What's the best way to reject a proposal of marriage?  

                   

 

You are invited to attend a live-streamed event on Wednesday 12 June, 1845 - 2015 UK time. The event celebrates 200 years since the publication of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The performance will include readings and music by Jeremy Harmer and the Bingham String Quartet. Poll questions will be asked throughout the performance and there will also be chance for questions on how to teach Jane Austen in the English language classroom.

Will the teaching profession as we know it become obsolete? 

                          
As part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture, Going Global - British Council and WISE - Qatar Foundation were delighted to co-host an evening debate entitled 'Future models of learning: will the teaching profession as we have known it become obsolete?'. The debate was followed by the announcement of the 2013 WISE Awards Finalists. If you were unable to attend the debate, watch it on video and find out how the audience voted.

Seminar recording now available on teaching English as an additional language

The British Council and The Bell Foundation sponsored a seminar for teachers working in the field of English as an additional language (EAL). The event took place in London in May 2013. A panel of specialists discussed different aspects of working in EAL, and looked at the paticular challenges involved.

The Turing Test

Alan Turing proposed a test inspired by a party game known as the 'Imitation Game', in which a man and a woman go into separate rooms, and guests try to tell them apart by writing a series of questions and reading the typewritten answers the man and the woman send back. This activity involves students writing a series of questions for online 'robots'.
