Hello again and welcome to another TeachingEnglish newsletter. This week we have lots of contributions from you the reader, including an account of surviving a horrible class, a new blog posting on the death of British author Beryl Bainbridge, and a plea for help from a reader who wants to know how to make her low level class more communicative.

There's also plenty for you to print off and use in the classroom including a new activity called 'What's the question?' and a complete lesson plan based on the slightly controversial topic of national identity cards. There's also a new Britlit kit for you to get your teeth into if you fancy bringing a bit of literature into your language classes.

Best wishes,

On how I survived a horrible class
I had one of my first classes at a new school yesterday and let's just say that it was probably one of the worst teaching experiences I've had so far! First of all, the students couldn´t be bothered to pay any attention to what I was saying (or desperately trying to say, to be precise), secondly it was in this really unwelcoming, dark and depressing place.

National identity cards
TeachingEnglishTry
This lesson looks at national identity cards. ID cards were first proposed by the Labour government in 2006. By 2010 some cards had been issued on a optional basis, mainly to foreign nationals. The new Conservative-Liberal Democrat government has confirmed that it will not continue with the ID cards scheme.

Communication in children
I'm working at a private school and I have a group of 8- year-old- children. The children are hard-working and very responsible. They perform the writing and reading activities without problems. However, when they have to communicate and use the language orally, they prefer to use their mother tongue all the time.
