TeachingEnglish Teachers Welcome to this week's edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter! This week we are happy to announce a series of eight webinars to celebrate World Teachers' Day 2021, running from 5-8 October 2021. We have news about our new four-week online training course 'How to motivate learners', which starts on 21 September. We also bring news of our latest podcast episode 'Environmental writes', part of our ten-part podcast 'The Climate Connection'. For the classroom, we have lots of activity suggestions for your first classes, and a plan for secondary learners to help them consider the environmental impacts of our families and homes.  World Teachers' Day 2021 webinars UNESCO World Teachers' Day takes place every year on 5 October. It is a perfect opportunity to thank teachers for their hard work and reflect on the difficult and challenging work they do. In 2021, we will be hosting eight talks by experienced teachers and experts in English language teaching. Each 60-minute session will give you the chance to think about and discuss a range of different issues and themes with English language teachers around the world, as well as providing you with practical ideas that you can take into your online or face-to-face classrooms. |

|  Teaching pathways: How to motivate learners Sign up for our new online course to start creating your own motivational learning environment. Learn about what affects motivation and discover some of the different ways you can energise and engage your students. Learn about some of the theories of motivation, explore different classroom strategies and learn about the role of feedback in motivation. Analyse which activities are energising and motivational for learners, discover some of the more common motivational problems, and how the 'gamification' of activities can be developed in a practical sense. |

 Activities for first lessons The activities that you use in your first lessons are very important and are likely to set the tone for the rest of your classes. In your first lessons, it's a good idea to focus on getting to know each other, to develop rapport in the class and to get an idea of the learners' interests and language level. Try these activities for lower-level learners. For intermediate-level learners, try some fluency activities to break the ice. |

|  The Climate Connection, episode 9: Environmental writes In episode 9 we explore how the global climate crisis is represented in English language textbooks. We explore how the climate crisis can successfully be integrated into language learning and how companies have responded to environmental challenges. In from the Field, we also hear from Sheena Adams, who has worked with a group of Inuvialuktun elders in Canada's Northwest Territories to create a new vocabulary of renewable energy terminology. |

 Family footprint Use this lesson with secondary students to consider the environmental impacts of our families and homes. In this lesson, secondary learners will develop their language and 21st-century skills in critical thinking and reaching agreement and compromise in discussions. They will then implement a questionnaire with some sensitive questions about home life and environmental issues. |

|  English clubs and corners It's the start of a new year for many of us, so why not try something new, such as wall displays or an English club? Using your initiative with both classrooms and clubs will be a rewarding and stimulating bonus to the actual teaching you're doing, and your learners will have fun and be rewarded. In this practical article you can find lots of ideas to get you started. |
