LearnEnglish Kids Newsletter December 2015 Welcome to the latest LearnEnglish Kids newsletter. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Christmas is celebrated in many places around the world, and kids can have fun and practise their English with lots of Christmas activities on LearnEnglish Kids.   Listen to a boy talking about Christmas in our My favourite day - Christmas story, find out how Amy helps Santa in our Santa's little helper story, and sing along to our Santa, Santa, high in the sky song.   Younger children will enjoy our Christmas Find the pairs game, as well as our Snowman craft, Christmas tree craft, Snowflake craft and other Christmas craft ideas. Older children can try our Christmas quiz or Letter to Santa game, and they can also write on the site and download printable worksheets on our Christmas Your turn or Favourite day Your turn. Finally, just for fun, all kids will love our Run Santa Run game - how far can they help Santa run?   Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday known as the Festival of Lights, also takes place in December. Children can learn more about it with our Hanukkah make the sentences game.   NEW FLASHCARDS! We are continuing to create new sets of flashcards for our flashcards section, and we have just added five more new sets!   Flashcards are great for teaching and reinforcing new language in class. Try our new Family flashcards, Feelings flashcards, Furniture flashcards, Home flashcards and Shapes flashcards.   Our Christmas flashcards are also updated with great new illustrations. Teachers can find two Christmas lesson plans using them on our sister site, TeachingEnglish, one for Christmas for very young learners and one about Christmas presents and decorations.   Parents can also use flashcards at home - watch our video tips Card safari or Memory game to see how to use them in different games!  NEW YOUR TURN WORKSHEETS! Have you seen our Your turn section recently? We have created more new worksheets for this section, to help support children with writing in English about fun and interesting topics.   New worksheets have been added to ten more of our Your turns, including our Reading Your turn and Riding a bike Your turn, as well as our Christmas food Your turn, New Year's Eve Your turn and New Year's resolutions Your turn, in time for the holiday season! These can be used in class or at home, and there are answer sheets to download too.  SOCIAL MEDIA If you have a holiday this month where you are, we hope you enjoy it! Parents can continue to find lots of interesting and useful suggestions and information on our Facebook page and Twitter page. These are great places to exchange ideas and advice with other parents too. This week we have winter activities for kids, a fun writing activity for teens, and an idea for integrating digital technology to revise past tenses with adults. The next EnglishAgenda professional development webinar is with Bríd Ní Chatháin, who will discuss how to improve reading comprehension for learners with dyslexia. Our featured professional development activity this week is one of our Video tips - 'Presentation for teachers'. And finally, we have an interesting blog by David Petrie outlining a series of activities, lessons and ideas that you can use to help your learners develop digital literacy skills. Or make a Santa-shaped advent calendar while learning numbers. There are also activities on feeding the birds, snowmen and of course Christmas. Go to the activities Teaching teens A dark and stormy night - the main focus of this activity is on developing writing skills, but it's also good for developing listening speaking and reading skills and also for practising past tenses, descriptive vocabulary and generally having fun. However, by mixing approaches, one can achieve elements of higher engagement by giving learners the opportunity to learn, analyze and create. She will explore some of the difficulties and suggest practical strategies and techniques for teachers who want to support struggling readers. One of Gavin Dudeney's recent articles on this site explores the ideas of digital literacies and emphasises the importance of incorporating them into your teaching. This article presents a series of activities, lessons and ideas that you can take away and use with your classes to help them develop some of these key skills.
