TeachingEnglish - the global home for teachers 09 September 2015 Welcome to the latest newsletter from TeachingEnglish This week we announce the 2016 call for entries to the ELTons Awards. The annual awards, run by the British Council and sponsored by Cambridge English Language Assessment and Macmillan Education, are now in their fourteenth year and celebrate English language teaching (ELT) worldwide. We also have a webinar recording, 'Encouraging learners to explore language through creative activities' by Adam Simpson, and an article 'Film and video' which discusses relationships between creative media and gives links to resources. For younger learners we have an activity on the topic of healthy eating, and for teenage learners a lesson plan based on a photograph which develops reading and listening skills. And finally, the featured professional practice from our new CPD framework this week is 'Planning lessons and courses'. We hope you find these resources useful. Deb TeachingEnglish team Teaching kids This CLIL activity aims to develop primary pupils' understanding of healthy, balanced eating and provides practice of basic food vocabulary and the present simple tense. It also has cross-curricular links to PE. Go to the resources Teaching teens 'Stairway to nowhere' is a complete set of teaching resources designed around an interesting and unusual photograph with activities to activate your students' higher level critical thinking skills. This pack looks at the topics of day trips and unexplained sights. The focus is on developing students' reading skills and listening for specific information. He also introduces a number of easily adaptable activities which facilitate creative thinking. LearnEnglish Kids Newsletter September 2015 Welcome to the latest LearnEnglish Kids newsletter. BACK TO SCHOOL Many children around the world are now going back to school after a long holiday. We have lots of school activities, songs and stories for children to enjoy. Older kids can read our fun Superhero High story, set in a very unusual school, and younger ones can sing our Quiet please song to practise useful classroom language. Children can also write about their school on our School Your turn.   MOBILE-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES Lots of activities on LearnEnglish Kids have just been updated to work on mobile devices.    Our Group the words games, Fill the gaps games, Find the definition games and Order the word games are all now mobile-friendly.    Almost all our songs and stories are ready to watch on your mobile device too, as well as our other videos. Why not try our Grammar videos, Kids news videos or Word of the week videos? We hope you enjoy them. We'll be updating more of our activities soon! NEW PRINTABLES FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS! We have just updated our flashcards with new, fun images. They can be used at home or in the classroom. We will be adding new sets of flashcards soon. Why not write and tell us what new sets you would like to see? We have also been adding printables to some of our Top tips for parents who are helping their child learn English. These can be printed out as a collection, and teachers can give them to their learners' parents for ideas. Finally, don't forget our Your turn section! Many of our Your turns have extra printable worksheets that help children learn words and write about different common topics. All our printables are free for registered users. Registration is free and only takes a few minutes.  SPECIAL DAYS September 8 is International Literacy Day. On LearnEnglish Kids, our Speak and spell section helps children discover English sounds and spellings through songs, stories and games.  Kids can also write about what they like reading on our Reading Your turn, and parents and teachers can download our free LearnEnglish Kids: Phonics Stories app for the iPad.  The International Day of Peace is on September 21. Children can go to our World Peace Day Your turn to tell us their ideas how to celebrate this special day.
