Learners think about how they can live in peace and about the importance of kindness in our everyday lives. Then they are introduced to the idea of a kindness calendar, and they brainstorm ideas of acts of kindness that they could do at home, at school and in the community. In the second half of the lesson, learners create their own kindness calendars, writing a kind act in each day’s box and decorating the calendar with illustrations. | | | September training offer – Engaging with vocabulary teaching | Engaging with vocabulary teaching is a three-hour self-study training module which is divided into three one-hour units. The aim of this module is to explore ways of presenting new vocabulary in the classroom. The module considers what is involved in learning new words, how to select words to teach and a range of methods and techniques for presenting vocabulary that take into account an inclusive multisensory approach. However, it could be used at any time of year, as this is not specifically mentioned. This lesson begins by looking at a definition of mindfulness and finding out what students already know. They then read a text about mindfulness, before focusing on vocabulary and grammar from the text. Finally, they carry out a mindfulness activity themselves and discuss the experience. | | | Critical thinking – a crucial 21st-century skill | As English language teachers, our primary focus is on the four language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking. While our students get a hang of these, we have to nudge them towards the 21st-century skills especially the 4Cs – critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication. All these can be seamlessly fostered in the English language classrooms.
