Our brand NEW lesson for the new year is a role-play writing and review activity for teenagers and adults.  And we have some useful tips to help you with your first lessons with kids, and pair and group work with teens. Our featured development resource is the NEW 'Teaching English Reading and Writing Video Training series' with nine units of videos and tasks! We also have news of the 2016 GlobELT conference, and an interesting blog by Fiona Mauchline 'Motivating teens - as easy as finding a snowflake that won't melt'. Deb TeachingEnglish team Teaching kids Teaching children takes a great deal of skill, patience and preparation, so this first tip is all about getting prepared and how to cope in your first few lessons. These tips are aimed at language assistants and newly qualified teachers. Read more Teaching teens When you're planning your lessons how much time do you spend thinking about how you're going to group students for the activities in your plan? If you have activities for pairs and groups, do you let the students decide who they're going to work with or do you decide? This tip looks at the advantages and disadvantages of the three main ways of grouping students. Find out more Teaching adults 'Your year in review' - for teenagers and adults at CEF level B1 and above - asks students to imagine that they are a famous international or national personality and complete a series of short paragraphs to review the previous year and look ahead to the next year. Go to the lesson plan Development The 'Teaching English Reading and Writing Video Training series' is a nine-part series of videos and tasks to help you explore different ways of developing reading and writing skills with your students. You'll visit classrooms from around the world and observe how teachers everywhere work with learners of all ages to develop the skills of reading and writing. Check out Unit one now! Go to the training series Events GlobELT, an international conference on teaching and learning English as an additional language, will be held in in Antalya, Turkey on 14-17 April 2016. LearnEnglish Kids Newsletter January 2016 Welcome to the latest LearnEnglish Kids newsletter. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Celebrate the start of 2016 with our Time for another year song. Children can sing along and then practise the months of the year with the downloadable worksheet. Kids can also tell us what they did for New Year's Eve on our New Year's Eve Your turn.   Many people will start 2016 by making New Year's resolutions, for example, 'This year I'm going to speak more English.' Kids can complete our new worksheet, write on the site and share their ideas on our New Year's resolutions Your turn.   Whatever your plans or resolutions, we wish you all a great 2016!   STORYTELLING WEEK National Storytelling Week starts on 30 January in the UK. On LearnEnglish Kids, we have lots of animated short stories for children to watch and read, each with a printable worksheet.   Kids can also create their own fun story with our Story maker activity. Then they can tell us about what they like reading on our Reading Your turn, and try the new downloadable worksheet.   Parents can try our English books at home and Using storybooks Top tips. Teachers might like to read an article about using the LearnEnglish Kids short stories in class on our sister site, TeachingEnglish. NEW FLASHCARDS We have added a new set of flashcards to each song in our Sounds section! These songs are all based on the UK phonics programme Letters and Sounds, which aims to develop children's listening, speaking and reading skills.    These flashcards are great for playing games both in class and at home. Take a look at our Have fun with flashcards and Play a flashcard game Top tips for parents, or watch our Memory game Video tip, for ideas for using flashcards at home.  FINDING ACTIVITIES Have you seen our topics cloud? This is one of the easiest ways to find songs, stories, games and other activities on the topic you're looking for. Just click on the word! If you are looking for a type of activity, try using the orange tabs at the top of any page. For example, you can find songs and stories under 'listen & watch', craft activities under 'make', or grammar videos and activities under 'grammar'.  We want to improve the ways you can find activities on LearnEnglish Kids.
