Language assessment in the classroom

IATEFL YLTSIG Emerald Anniversary web conference

Taking place on 5–7 November 2021 and featuring 35 sessions to mark 35 years, the timely theme of the IATEFL YLTSIG web conference is: Beyond an industry: professionalising global TEYL practices. The three days include keynotes, plenaries, inspires, talks and quizzes. The global speaker line-up includes Joan Kang Shin, Daniel Xerri, Carol Read, Bruno Andrade, Vinicius Nobre, Gail Ellis and many more. Climate action in language education

Sign up now for our upcoming online course looking at integrating climate action in the English language classroom. This is a practical course designed to train English language teachers how to integrate environmental issues in English language teaching, through the exploration of language, principles and projects. The course begins on 19 October and lasts four weeks.

Bonfire Night

This lesson is aimed at 10- to 15-year-old, lower-level students, with a variety of activities related to Bonfire Night. Students will do a jigsaw reading to complete a text about Bonfire Night, and then discuss their opinions about it. They will design a Bonfire Night menu, thinking about the food they would like to eat while watching fireworks, learn a popular rhyme and produce a firework safety poster.

Teachers as materials writers: some considerations

Most teachers create at least some of their classroom materials, either as a supplement or as a replacement to the coursebook they are using. Are your materials good quality? You probably think they are but how do you know? And what can you do to make sure they pass a certain standard of quality control? Here are a few questions and answers that might help you to make your good materials even better.

Our celebrations for World Teachers' Day have begun!

Earlier today we heard from Sophia Mavridi, who looked back on our language teaching experiences during Covid-19 to look ahead, while Lesley Fearn explained how integrating Online Community Projects into language curriculums can support teachers in their professional development and incite learner-centred approaches.

In our last newletter, we brought you news of Thursday's webinars – Teenagers: Flow and the random factor and Using WhatsApp for interactive tasks.This week, we bring you more information about our events on Wednesday and Friday and look forward to you joining us for these.

To mark Dyslexia Awareness Week 2021, we also feature a talk by Maria Jose Galleno: Giving a hand. Apps for dyslexia.

And finally, with Halloween just around the corner, we bring you a collection of activities to help you celebrate this fun festival with your learners.

Quizzing tools, retrieval practice and multi-modal feedback in language lessons

Join Joe Dale on Wednesday 6 October 2021 at 12 p.m. UK for the third talk in our World Teachers' Day 2021 celebrations. Joe will showcase a variety of examples of good practice in online teaching. He will explain ways in which teachers have dealt with life during the pandemic and show how different cross-platform tools can promote collaboration, independent learning, retrieval practice and assessment opportunities in a remote teaching and hybrid teaching context.

In his talk on Wednesday 6 October at 5 p.m. UK, Matthew Ellman will look at the essential ingredients of impactful teacher development activity. Teachers will learn how to make time spent on development productive; trainers will find out what they can do to ensure their training makes a difference once trainees go back to their classrooms.

Digital literacies

Join Nicky Hockly on Friday 8 October 2021 at 12 p.m. UK for the seventh talk in our World Teachers' Day 2021 celebrations. Nicky will look at some of the theory underpinning digital literacies and explore how teachers can develop their learners' digital literacies (while often developing their own!). By the end of this webinar, you will have a clearer understanding of what digital literacies are and why they are important. You will also have some practical ideas about how to develop your learners' digital literacies in class while also supporting their language learning.

Eco-literacy: What? Why? And How?

We end our World Teachers' Day celebrations with Ceri Jones and Katherine Bilsborough on Friday 8 October at 5 p.m. UK. If you are thinking, 'Eco-literacy! What is it? Why is it important? How can I do it?' this webinar is for you. This session will give you a clear understanding of what eco-literacy means, why it is important and, more importantly, how you can easily start developing your learners' eco-literacy skills.

Giving a hand. Apps for dyslexia

In this talk, Maria Jose Galleno looks at different apps that help learners who have dyslexia. Maria explains how technological tools can be used to enhance learning opportunities and help dyslexic learners become free from dependence on simplified material and special aid from the teacher. By using the technology, teachers are able to deliver more valuable lessons in which they can engage all students, thus creating a fully inclusive classroom.
