TeachingEnglish Teachers

Welcome to this week's edition of the TeachingEnglish newsletter!

This week we are happy to announce our new ten-part podcast 'The Climate Connection'. Episode one 'Taking the temperature' is available now. Listen and subscribe to see how you can incorporate a focus on climate action in your English language classrooms.

We also have information about a new, free, online training course, 'Teaching languages in primary schools: putting research into practice'.

For the classroom, we have three lesson plans: one focused on transport for primary learners, and two for adult and teenage learners focused on news reports and vegetarianism.

We also feature recordings of the two plenary sessions at this year's English UK English Language Teaching Conference.

We hope you find these resources useful.

The Climate Connection

The Climate Connection is a ten-part podcast series from the British Council which explores the relationship between the climate crisis and language education.

Across the ten episodes, we'll hear from a wide range of leading practitioners working in the sector. We'll travel from Colombia to China, Moldova to Mali, and Palestine to Poland in our quest to share what's happening at the cutting edge of climate action in language education.

In partnership with the Oxford English Dictionary, we'll also learn more about the origins of climate-related language, in both English and other languages.

Developing writing skills: a news report

This lesson plan for teachers of teenage and adult students at pre-intermediate level and above is based on the theme of news reports. The lesson takes a process approach to writing, and students will develop their abilities to organise information and construct it into a text. There are also a number of suggested follow-up activities.

Vegetarianism

National Vegetarian Week runs from 10 to 16 May, and this lesson for teenagers and adults at CEFR level B1 and above raises awareness of some of the reasons for vegetarianism, while helping them to develop their reading and speaking skills. Learners also participate in a role play and explore vegetarian recipes as part of a mini-project.

English UK English Language Teaching Conference

English UK's recent 2021 ELT Conference was an event of two halves: Wednesday's programme was for ELT managers working at English UK member centres, and Thursday's programme was for ELT teachers. Watch recordings of the two plenaries by Silvana Richardson and Chia Suan Chong, and Colm Downes, Christopher Graham and Dianna Toroysan.

Sustainable living: transport

This lesson introduces low-level primary learners to the concept of sustainable living. The class works in small groups as well as a whole class. They carry out a class survey, make calculations about means of transport and produce a visual wall display illustrating the results of their survey. You could use it to mark World Bicycle Day on 3 June.
